By Sakuan Izumi

"You smell good. What is it?"
"This? It’s perfume."
"It’s different from incense or a sachet. I like this smell."
"Hey. Too close."

Incense

It is said that incense came to Japan around the 6th century, along with Buddhism. The practice of using fragrant wood and solid perfume in a case and incense burner to apply fragrance onto clothes and rooms spread from the nobles to the warlords, and eventually to the common people. In the Edo period, incense was used among regular people as well as prostitutes, although they did not apply directly it on their skin, unlike modern people.
