Only White, Black and Red

By Sakuan Izumi

"Oh, it’s awful. It does not suit me to the point that it’s funny."
"It’s not like you. Let me take a look."
"Leave me alone."
"Good colors. Boy, this looks brilliant even applied lightly."
"How come you sound like you’re having fun?"

Makeup with three colors

In the Edo period, they only used three colors; white (white powder), black (painted eyebrows and teeth) and red (beni). Although there were certain rules based on their social status and age, they seem to have had fun mixing the colors, putting them on different places in different thickness and gradation, to try out trends and their own tastes in search of the right fit.
