As was the case for women, whose age and social status could be estimated by looking at their hairstyles, during the Edo period there were various social rules for men's hairstyles. One of the typical male hairstyles was sakayaki, shaved forehead, and also variations were produced by changing the shape and length of their sides (bin) and the nape of the neck (tabo, or tsuto).
