You can't wash it by yourself!

By Sakuan Izumi

"It's taking forever. Why don't you have it cut?"
"No! I told you. I can do it myself."
"It's impossible to wash it yourself."
"Don't make fun of me."

Women in the Edo period washed their hair once or twice a month. They made shampoo by mixing funori and udon flour with hot water, applied it onto their hair, rubbed it by hand and washed it off. Since they did not have a hot shower ready to come out of a water tap, it took a whole day to unbundle their long hair covered with hair oil and wash it.
