Metallic Colors

By Sakuan Izumi

"Is this a lip color? It’s really green, isn’t it? Is the color going to change when applied?
It really did change. Now it is red.Wait, wait, how much do you plan to put on?
There you go.It’s green. It has turned green again because you put on too much of it.It’s even metallic.Glistening."
"Will you be quiet."

Sasairobeni

Lip color in the Edo period was made from safflower and sold attached on the side of a sake cup. When applied on lips, the color changed into different shades of red, depending on the person. When applied thicker, it turned metallic green with a golden shade, the reason why it was called sasairobeni.
